What great ape books has everyone read? Which would you recommend?
I've been slowly growing a little great ape library over the years. My list of books I've read is currently:
Chimpanzees "In the Shadow of Man"- Jane Goodall "Through a Window"- Jane Goodall "Next of Kin"- Roger Fouts "Chimpanzee Politics- Power and Sex Among Apes"- Frans de Waal "The Chimps of Fauna Sanctuary"- Andrew Westoll
Gorillas "Gorillas in the Mist"- Dian Fossey "My Gorilla Journey"- Helen Attwater "In the Kingdom of Gorillas"- Bill Weber and Amy Vedder
Orangutans "Orangutans- Wizards of the Rainforest"- Anne Russon "Reflections of Eden"- Birute Galdikas
Bonobos "Bonobo Handshake"- Vanessa Woods
Various "Jeremy and Amy"- Jeremy Keeling "The Wauchula Woods Accord" ("Roger's World" in Australia)- Charles Siebert
My top 5 would probably be: 1."In the Shadow of Man" 1."Next of Kin" 3."The Chimpanzees of Fauna Sanctuary" 4."Gorillas in the Mist" 5."Through a Window"

Hi...I just finished reading Ape House by Sara Gruen....she also wrote Water for Elephants. It's not a research book or anything, it's a story, but does mention a couple truths about happenings in the research world.

That sounds interesting, a friend of mine has that but I don't think has read it yet so they haven't given me their review! You don't see that many fiction stories about apes around, it sounds worth a read. I imagine it would be a good way of the general public to learn a bit about apes in research, which is always a good thing!

Fictionwise I read Brazzaville Beach and one of the themes in that is about the main character following a group of chimpanzees that have split from the main group which is being studied. Not for the faint hearted!
I started Will Self's "Great Ape" where a man wakes up and finds the world populated by chimps, I only got to about page 2 but I must give it another go.
