Wow! It is great that the zoo made an effort to make the day special, but they are stunning orangutans and very bright. I've seen Sumatran orangutans at Jersey and of course Silvestre at Monkey World but they don't look very different at all to Borneans.
How old are they, they look very mature and very settled. Do they get on well together?

I find that Sumatran and Bornean orangutans look quite different, Sumatrans tend to have hairier faces, which is especially noticeable in the females. The only Bornean female I've seen with quite as much hair is A-Mei at Monkey World. The colour difference can be quite obvious when they are living together.
Karta is 29, Kluet is just a young lad of 16, he's only recently started developing cheekpads. They've lived together since 2008 and seem to get along pretty well.

I think Sumatrans faces also tend to look quite wrinkled, even Utara at Chester who is about 7 has had wrinkles for a few years. You've seen Chester's Sumatrans too Joan.

I'd forgotten that I'd seen the Chester zoo sumatrans, will get to meet them on 20th August at the EAZA behind the scenes visit. I am so excited and we get to see the chimpanzees too.
Kluet looks older than 16, A-Mei at Monkey World is especially stunning, Jim Cronin described her as drop dead gorgeous and he was right. She has a new lease of life joining Gordon's group, her new playmate is Kai and they play rough!

I'm glad to hear that, although everyone said how much she missed the babies she never looked that happy to me, although I know orangs don't actually ever look very thrilled!
Shame you can't come to the fundraiser Amy! Just a bit too far!

I'm so glad to hear that A-Mei is doing well in an adult group, it must be lovely for Kai to have a new playmate as well- especially one with such a soft spot for youngsters!
Would love to go, but yes, it is just a little bit too far away! I will have to do the behind the scenes visits at Melbourne Zoo some time to make up for it.

You would expect Hsaio-Ning and Kai to be great pals because they are quite close in age but whenever I see Hsaio-Ning, she is keeping to herself. It's a pity because it is a really nice group in which she could make good friends and have a lot of fun.

Pululah- I love your avatar, that's Puluh isn't it? He's such a handsome orangutan, just like his brother Pusung was. I'm looking forward to seeing Puspa (their older sister) at Adelaide Zoo someday, she doesn't come out with the others yet as they haven't been introduced, but apparently is sometimes out early in the mornings. I believe their mother, Puan is still alive at Perth Zoo, she must be very old now.

If Puan is still alive she would be in her 50's. She's had many offspring, the ones that I know of are Puteri (f), Puspa (f), Pusung (m), Puntjac (m), Punya (f), Puluh (m) and Pulang (f), and she has many grandchildren, at least one of which has been released into the wild successfully. I'd love to visit Perth Zoo's orangutans one day, they sound fascinating.

And she has a great grand-daughter, Moira, in Budapest also.

Had a lovely visit into the RotRA today and saw all the Puluh family close up! Even Puluh himself, who is not really a people person, was won over by the promise of honey! We also went out onto the top and I was thrilled that Bornean Martha, the oldest orang in the UK came up to see us.

Sounds lovely. From the photos I've seen RotRA looks very impressive indeed. Puluh sounds very different to Pusung- he was VERY much a people person! It must have been wonderful to see Puluh up close. How old is Martha? I find it interesting that in the UK there are relatively few Sumatran Orangutans, whereas in Australia I don't think we have any pure Borneans any more! (Perth Zoo has Sumatrans, Melbourne has Sumatrans and two hybrids, Taronga has hybrids and Adelaide has Sumatrans)

For those who aren't familiar with ape exhibits in the UK, 'RotRA' is 'Realm of the Red Ape', Chester Zoo's orangutan exhibit.
